If there ever was a woman who learned the truth of this passage, it would be Gini Thompson. In October 2015, Gini brought her willingness and a small request before God to make and sell 15 journals. Her desire was to give $150 to WOW – Women for Oppressed Women. The WOW sister discovered quickly, however, that God not only would pour out blessings of journal sales, but He would also throw open the floodgates of heaven to increase the desire of her heart – a desire to make far more than 15 journals.
“God really does give us the desires of our heart,” Gini says. “But I’ve come to realize that He increases our desires to meet His plans.”
Gini’s idea for the journals came from a challenge the WOW sisters gave one another – to determine some way that each woman could raise money for WOW projects. Gini had seen a photo of a diary on Pinterest and decided that she could develop a similar design for journals. She pulled together some coordinating fabrics, drew out a design, sewed 15 journals, and took them to the school where she worked. They were a huge hit and sold almost immediately.
“I thought, ‘Maybe I am thinking too small,’” Gini says. “Maybe I should try to raise $300 for WOW.”
So Gini made 15 more journals.
And Gini sold 15 journals almost immediately.
In fact, Gini was now getting orders for multiple journals. And along with the increased orders God gave Gini a heart overflowing with desire to sew more and more. By Christmas 2015 – just two short months after she’d even conceived the idea – Gini had made and sold 150 journals and raised $1500 for WOW.
And the snowball of orders and blessings continues to grow.
The demand for journals became so great that Gini could not handle every order by herself. God provided for every need.
• WOW sisters, Linda Edwards and Lorraine Pruitt began to help with the sewing.
• Gini’s neighbor, Kim Daniels, began to finish the journals by adding liners, page markers and labels.
• Individuals and companies began to donate large supplies of fabric.
• Orders continued to come in from individuals and groups.
Today, Gini’s Journals have raised more than $6000 for the poor and oppressed in Greater Akron, Africa and Asia. And they are continuing to play a pivotal role in WOW’s 2017 fundraising efforts.
For the entire year of 2017, WOW is committing all of its resources to Broken Chains Ministry in order to underwrite the launching of Lydia’s Home, a safe place for women leaving prison. At its optimum, this transition house will provide more than shelter. The home will be an environment for women to realize their full, God-given purpose and abilities. To make this plan a reality, Broken Chains needs great financial support. Therefore, WOW is committing our entire income each month to Broken Chains, trusting that God will provide all the funds necessary.
You can join WOW in its efforts by purchasing a journal for yourself, a friend or even your entire book club, Bible study or other organization. Journals are $10 each and are available at the following venues:
• The Women’s Spring Retreat at Camp Carl on Saturday, April 29, 2017.
• The Resource Center at The Chapel in Akron.
• Through any WOW sister.
• By contacting us through e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
Journals also can be custom-made to coordinate with your group’s color scheme.
“I chose to make journals,” Gini says, “because journals are a powerful tool. Journaling allows God to guide our prayers through our pens. Journals also provide us with a written record of all God does in our lives.”
Will you join us in providing hope and healing to the women served by Broken Chains? Purchase your journal today and see how God “throws open the floodgates of heaven to pour out so much blessing that there will not be room to store it.”
